SUMMARY:Trial Advocacy Program 2026
DESCRIPTION:Trial Ad is an intensive five-day training program. This program begins on the afternoon of Sunday\, June 7\, 2026\, and ends on Friday\, June 12\, 2026\, at 1:00 PM. Thursday afternoon is free time. \nThe program offers approximately 18 CLE hours. Students attend lectures and demonstrations given by prosecutors and physicians covering medical\, legal\, and tactical aspects of the prosecution of a child abuse case\, focusing on abusive head trauma. Attendees will be assigned to workshop groups for intensive small group learning and practical learning purposes. Video feedback of student performances will be given by faculty. Professional actors play the roles of witnesses for student cross examination skills. Attendance is limited to 35 students. Attendance at all sessions is mandatory. \nACCEPTANCE IS BY APPLICATION ONLY. Upon completion of the online registration\, a link to download an application will be emailed to each applicant and is to be completed and returned to CASC. Applications are due by COB on April 1\, 2026. Those accepted will be notified no later than April 21\, 2026. \nThere is no tuition. A private hotel room will be provided to attendees whose offices are more than twenty-five miles from the training site. Breakfast and lunch will be provided each day. SUMMARY:Head Case: Anatomy of a Bad Explanation - Investigating and Prosecuting Abusive Head Trauma
DESCRIPTION:This team-based\, three-day training is designed for prosecutors\, law enforcement\, and child protective services working together as an MDT in Abusive Head Trauma cases. The course takes teams from early investigative decisions through charging and trial\, with a focus on AHT medical science in plain language\, effective use of pediatric abuse experts\, and effective analysis of medical records\, autopsy findings\, timelines\, and differential diagnoses. Participants learn how to assess case strength early\, identify gaps\, anticipate and counter defense theories\, and present a clear\, defensible narrative for court\, while addressing the ethical and practical challenges unique to catastrophic injury and child death cases. \nSpace is limited to 10 teams comprised of one prosecutor\, one investigator and one child protective services personnel from the same jurisdiction. \nAll team members must register and submit an application to be considered. Once registered\, your confirmation email will contain the application\, which is due by March 13\, 2026. ACCEPTANCE IS BY APPLICATION ONLY. Accepted teams will be notified by March 30. \nThe program is free. Breakfast\, lunch\, and parking are also free. SUMMARY:DUID for Law Enforcement and Prosecutors Training - City of Fairfax
DESCRIPTION:This 1 1/2-day course is designed specifically for Virginia prosecutors and law enforcement officers handling impaired driving cases where the driver is impaired by drug(s). Topics include illegal drugs\, marijuana\, prescription drugs\, over-the-counter drugs and other impairing substances. The training includes a range of topics including the drug categories and their spectrum of potential physiological responses\, aspects of expert testimony\, blood draws\, information from Drug Recognition Experts (DREs) and their role\, discussions of responding to defense arguments in DUID cases\, court demonstrations and more. Participants will receive a training binder and the latest version of the Virginia DUI Manual. \nThis training follows a team-based format\, ideally admitting a team consisting of one prosecutor and one law enforcement officer from the same jurisdiction. Groups can also be admitted comprised of a prosecutor(s) and a law enforcement officer(s). However\, individuals may still enroll if they are unable to form a team. The program is limited to 50 attendees—40 with lodging accommodations and 10 commuting attendees. \nThere is no registration fee for this training. Lodging and meals will be provided or reimbursed (per CASC policy) for participants whose office is twenty-five (25) miles or more from the training venue. Lunch will be provided for commuting attendees. Please note that no mileage or travel costs will be reimbursement. \nTraining is scheduled to be held 6/16/2026 11:00 a.m. – 6/17/2026 4:00 p.m.\, but these times may change slightly. SUMMARY:Fury Road: Investigating and Prosecuting Impaired Fatal Crashes
DESCRIPTION:The Fury Road Program is an intensive two-day training for Virginia prosecutors and law enforcement officers\, scheduled to take place in Staunton from June 23 to 25\, 2026. It will cover crash scene evidence collection\, crash reconstruction\, charging decisions\, dealing with legal defenses\, case scenarios\, victim outreach\, and more! Participants will receive the latest version of the Virginia DUI Manual. \nThis training follows a team-based format\, ideally requiring a team consisting of a prosecutor and a law enforcement officer from the same jurisdiction.  It’s designed for law enforcement officers who are either Virginia State Troopers handling impaired driving cases or a local law enforcement officer who is on a crash response team or regularly involved in investigating fatal motor vehicle crashes. Attendance at all sessions of the program is mandatory. \nRegistration does not guarantee acceptance into the program. Confirmation of selection will be sent by email by May 1\, 2026. \nLodging and meals will be provided or reimbursed (per CASC policy) for participants whose office is twenty-five (25) miles or more from the training venue. Lunch will be provided for commuting attendees.
