SUMMARY:DUID for Law Enforcement and Prosecutors Training - Wise County
DESCRIPTION:This 1 1/2-day course is designed specifically for Virginia prosecutors and law enforcement officers handling impaired driving cases where the driver is impaired by drug(s). Topics include illegal drugs\, marijuana\, prescription drugs\, over-the-counter drugs and other impairing substances. The training includes a range of topics including the drug categories and their spectrum of potential physiological responses\, aspects of expert testimony\, blood draws\, information from Drug Recognition Experts (DREs) and their role\, discussions of responding to defense arguments in DUID cases\, court demonstrations and more. Participants will receive the latest version of the Virginia DUI Manual. \nThis training follows a team-based format\, ideally admitting a team consisting of one prosecutor and one law enforcement officer from the same jurisdiction. Groups can also be admitted comprised of a prosecutor(s) and a law enforcement officer(s). However\, individuals may still enroll if they are unable to form a team. The program is limited to 50 attendees—40 with lodging accommodations and 10 commuting attendees. \nThere is no registration fee for this training. Lodging and meals will be provided or reimbursed (per CASC policy) for participants whose office is twenty-five (25) miles or more from the training venue. Lunch will be provided for commuting attendees. Please note that no mileage or travel costs will be reimbursement. \nTraining is scheduled to be held 7/13/2026 11:00 a.m. – 7/14/2026 4:00 p.m.\, but these times may change slightly. The full agenda will also be sent in early July. \n\n\nThis program is for Virginia prosecutors and law enforcement officers only. \nPlease contact Paula Bruns at pmbruns@wm.edu with any questions. \nClick here to register.

SUMMARY:Analyzing Police Use of Force: Legal and Practical Issues
DESCRIPTION:CASC is excited to share a new free training for Virginia prosecutors and Virginia law enforcement officers\, “Analyzing Police Use of Force: Legal and Practical Issues”. Law enforcement are authorized to use force but may only do so when it is lawful and reasonable. Analyzing whether law enforcement use of force is lawful and reasonable requires an understanding of both the law and practical experience. This course will examine the law of use of force and the numerous influences that intersect to produce unintended\, sometimes catastrophic\, outcomes. Three of these will be addressed: the illusion of confidence\, failure to build resilience into response behaviors\, and training scars resulting from learning the wrong lessons during skill development. \nThis two-day training will take place Thursday\, July 16 – Friday\, July 17\, 2026\, at CASC’s Training Facility in downtown Richmond. \nThis program is open to Virginia prosecutors and Virginia law enforcement officers. The program is free of charge. No reimbursement or meals will be provided for this training. \nIf you have questions\, contact Elliott Casey at ejcasey@wm.edu. \nRegistration opens soon.
