SUMMARY:Analyzing Police Use of Force: Legal and Practical Issues
DESCRIPTION:CASC is excited to share a new free training for Virginia prosecutors and Virginia law enforcement officers\, “Analyzing Police Use of Force: Legal and Practical Issues”. Law enforcement are authorized to use force but may only do so when it is lawful and reasonable. Analyzing whether law enforcement use of force is lawful and reasonable requires an understanding of both the law and practical experience. This course will examine the law of use of force and the numerous influences that intersect to produce unintended\, sometimes catastrophic\, outcomes. Three of these will be addressed: the illusion of confidence\, failure to build resilience into response behaviors\, and training scars resulting from learning the wrong lessons during skill development. \nThis two-day training will take place Thursday\, July 16 – Friday\, July 17\, 2026\, at CASC’s Training Facility in downtown Richmond. \nThis program is open to Virginia prosecutors and Virginia law enforcement officers. The program is free of charge. No reimbursement or meals will be provided for this training. \nIf you have questions\, contact Elliott Casey at ejcasey@wm.edu. \nRegistration opens soon.
