SUMMARY:Combatting Commercial Sex Trafficking and Forced Labor in Virginia:  A Comprehensive Training for Law Enforcement and Prosecutors
DESCRIPTION:CASC\, DCJS and the VSP together are offering a free four-day training to both prosecutors and law enforcement on the investigation and prosecution of commercial sex trafficking and forced labor.  It will be held in Williamsburg from January 13 – 16\, 2025. \nThis program\, developed in partnership with the Human Trafficking Institute in Washington D.C.\, will increase the overall awareness and understanding of commercial sex trafficking\, forced labor and illicit massage businesses.  It will dispel common myths and misconceptions through the use of data and create an understanding and working knowledge of the applicable forced labor and commercial sex trafficking laws.  It will further increase victim identification and improve human trafficking investigations and prosecutions and will improve the collaborative response to combatting trafficking in the Commonwealth of Virginia. \nThe program is free.  Lodging will be provided\, if requested\, for attendees whose offices are more than twenty-five miles from the training site.  Free parking is available.  Breakfast and lunch will be provided free of charge each day. DESCRIPTION:The Advanced Trial Advocacy Program is an intensive three-day program offered for prosecutors who have some jury trial experience.  This program will provide approximately 12 CLE hours. Instead of a case study being provided to students\, attendees will each bring one of their own cases to work from throughout the program.  Lectures will cover analytical advocacy and theory bases prosecution as well as all phases of a jury trial from voir dire to closing argument and preserving the record   There will be small group case discussions and student performances. \nThis program will be held in Norfolk.  Attendance is limited to 30 students. Contact Paula Bruns at pmbruns@wm.edu\, if want to register for this training. \nThe Advanced DUI Training Program is an intensive course designed specifically for Virginia prosecutors and law enforcement officers and will be held in Williamsburg on March 3 – 6\, 2025. The program will cover a range of critical topics\, including investigative stops\, Standard Field Sobriety Tests (SFST) and Preliminary Breath Testing (PBT)\, breath and blood testing issues\, DUI checkpoints\, and the use of transcripts and legal code sections to prove elements in court. Additionally\, the program will address key issues in manslaughter cases and provide opportunities to analyze factual scenarios. Participants will receive the latest edition of the Virginia DUI Manual. \nThis training follows a team-based format\, ideally requiring a team consisting of one prosecutor and one law enforcement officer from the same jurisdiction. However\, individuals may still enroll if they are unable to form a team. The program is limited to 50 attendees—40 with lodging accommodations and 10 commuting attendees. Lodging and meals will be provided for participants who reside more than 25 miles from the training site\, and lunch will be provided for commuting attendees. This program is funded by Virginia State Police as its annual “Red Flag” insurance fraud training\, which focuses on different aspects of fraud each year. This year\, the program will focus on obtaining and using financial records in financial and fraud investigations and will cover financial investigations\, obtaining and using financial records\, financial interviews and interrogations\, building financial cases\, and working with prosecutors. Some\, but not all\, sessions will be repeated from previous “Red Flag” insurance fraud trainings. \nThe program is free. Lodging for attendees whose offices are more than twenty-five miles from the training site and parking will be provided and meals will be reimbursed at state per diem rates. However\, individuals may still enroll if they are unable to form a team. The program is limited to 50 attendees—40 with lodging accommodations and 10 commuting attendees. SUMMARY:Trial Advocacy Program
DESCRIPTION:The Trial Advocacy Program is an intensive five-day program offered for Commonwealth’s Attorneys and their Assistants at all levels of experience\, offering approximately 25 CLE hours. Attendees spend approximately 8 hours at lectures and demonstrations given by prosecutors and physicians covering medical\, legal and tactical aspects of the prosecution of child abusers\, focusing on abusive head trauma cases. The remaining time is spent in small workshop groups discussing and practicing case analysis\, trial strategy\, opening statements\, direct examination\, cross-examination and closing argument in the context of a hypothetical abusive head trauma case. Attendees will be assigned to workshop groups. Wednesday afternoon is free time. Attendance at all sessions of the program is mandatory.  \nAttendance is limited to 40 students. ACCEPTANCE IS BY APPLICATION ONLY. Upon completion of the online registration\, you will receive a confirmation email containing a link to the application. Complete and return the application to Jill Harris at jcharris@wm.edu by March 21\, 2025. Acceptance decisions will be emailed no later than April 14\, 2025. \nLodging is provided.
