SUMMARY:Fury Road: Investigating and Prosecuting Impaired Fatal Crashes
DESCRIPTION:The Fury Road Program is an intensive two-day training for Virginia prosecutors and law enforcement officers\, scheduled to take place in Staunton from June 23 to 25\, 2026. It will cover crash scene evidence collection\, crash reconstruction\, charging decisions\, dealing with legal defenses\, case scenarios\, victim outreach\, and more! Participants will receive the latest version of the Virginia DUI Manual. \nThis training follows a team-based format\, ideally requiring a team consisting of a prosecutor and a law enforcement officer from the same jurisdiction.  It’s designed for law enforcement officers who are either Virginia State Troopers handling impaired driving cases or a local law enforcement officer who is on a crash response team or regularly involved in investigating fatal motor vehicle crashes. Attendance at all sessions of the program is mandatory. \nRegistration does not guarantee acceptance into the program. Confirmation of selection will be sent by email by May 1\, 2026. \nLodging and meals will be provided or reimbursed (per CASC policy) for participants whose office is twenty-five (25) miles or more from the training venue. Lunch will be provided for commuting attendees. Please note that no mileage will be reimbursement. \nFor more information\, contact Paula Bruns at pmbruns@wm.edu. \nClick here to register. ***Registration is closed. Contact Paula Bruns at pmbruns@wm.edu if you are interested in attending the training.

SUMMARY:Webinar: Prosecuting Abusive Head Trauma: What Virginia Prosecutors Need to Know About the New Jersey Nieves/Cifelli Decisions
DESCRIPTION:CASC is pleased to present the next webinar in our 2026 webinar series: “Prosecuting Abusive Head Trauma: What Virginia Prosecutors Need to Know About the New Jersey Nieves/Cifelli Decisions“. \nJoin Henrico County Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney Alison Martin & CASC Deputy Director Nancy Oglesby as they cover the recent appellate decisions out of New Jersey\, State v. Nieves and Cifelli\, which has generated significant discussion and\, in many cases\, misplaced debate about the science of abusive head trauma (AHT). These cases are now being raised in courtrooms beyond New Jersey\, including in Virginia\, often with claims that go well beyond what the decisions hold. \nThis webinar will break down those rulings and cover what the New Jersey Supreme Court actually decided\, the procedural posture of the cases\, and why those details matter when applied in practice. The session also addresses how these decisions are being mischaracterized in litigation and how to best respond when they arise in your cases\, including reinforcing how the science behind AHT remains as solid and reliable as ever \nThe webinar will take place on Tuesday\, June 30\, 2026\, from 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. \nCASC welcomes both prosecutors and their staff members employed in Virginia Commonwealth’s Attorneys’ Offices to this webinar. \nYou must register by end of day on June 29\, 2026.  Click here to register.
